Having spend 2 weeks driving across the country of Spain last summer, I can tell you it is quite the experience. It’s such a diverse country, with bustling cities, gorgeous mountains, crystal clear waters, and adorable villages. To help you plan a visit to Spain, I’ve listed the 40 things you will most want to do in Spain in the Ultimate Spain Bucket List!

(I’ve done 17 of these – they are starred below!)

1. *Admire Gaudi’s artwork in Barcelona. This can be done at Parc Guell, the Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera, or Casa Batllo.

2. Visit the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. Opened in 1997, this architectural marvel is stunning.

3. Soak in the gorgeous beaches of Formentera. It’s like Ibiza but without the crowds!

4. *Hike down the huge cliff in Ronda. And find a good viewpoint to view the enormous bridge!

5. View Es Pontàs in Mallorca. Malta’s Azure window may have crumbled but this natural stone arch is still standing.

6. *Take a selfie with the Smurfs at Juzcar. As the country’s Smurf village, you really can’t miss these little blue creatures!

7. Marvel at the aqueduct in Segovia. While you’re there, visit the Jewish quarter!

8. View the incredible landscapes of Las Medulas. What used to be a Roman gold mine has totally transformed the landscape here.

9. *Kayak to sea caves at Playa de la Granadella. Kayaks can be rented right at the beach.

10. Walk through the striped arches in the Mosque of Cordoba. And while you’re there, take a photo!

11. *Dip your churros in chocolate in Madrid. This must be done at the Chocolateria San Ginés.

12. Admire the multicolored houses in Girona. The best viewpoint is right by the river.

13. *Roam the white-washed streets of Altea. Pretend like you’re on a Greek island.

14. Visit the Alhambra in Granada. This palace and fortress is designed spectacularly.

15. See the flowers bloom in the Canary Islands. These islands are closer to Africa than Spain but nevertheless are totally beautiful and well-worth the visit.

16. *Take a boat through Plaza de España. One of the most beautiful plazas in the world, this is located in Seville!

17. Experience the La Tomatina Festival. In a town called Buñol, on the last Wednesday of August everyone throws tomatoes at each other in the streets.

18. *Be wowed at the pink lake of Torrevieja. And slather yourself in the mud, it’s said to spa-like healing properties!

19. Party it up in Ibiza. The ultimate party island is also full of gorgeous natural landscapes.

20. *Stroll through the City of Arts and Sciences. This architectural marvel is located in the heart of Valencia.

21. Hike through the Sierra Nevada mountain range. If you’re looking for more outdoorsy experiences, this one’s for you.

22. See FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou. As one of the most famous soccer (or football, for you non-Americans) teams, seeing them play would be the ultimate experience.

23. Visit the Basilica de San Isidoro in Leon. This church is also a library and hotel.

24. *Climb up the Penon d’Ifach in Calp. And visit the salt lakes to see some flamingos!

25. Dine finely at Cáceres. Named the Capital of Gastronomy in 2015, its old town is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

26. Wander through Ciutadella on Menorca. As one of Spain’s less popular islands, you probably won’t be facing any crowds.

27. *Lounge by the turquoise waters of Zahara. This reservoir is the brightest turquoise you’ve ever seen!

28. Admire the architecture of Zaragoza. The architecture in this city combines Gothic and Islamic styles.

29. *Climb up to the Bunkers Del Carmel. Here you’ll get an amazing 360 view of Barcelona.

30. Learn Spanish in Salamanca. Home to the one of the oldest universities in Europe, this is definitely a student city.

31. *Snap photos in Port Saplaya. This gorgeous multicolored port is in Valencia.

32. Marvel at Setenil de las Bodegas. This entire town literally fits underneath a rock.

33. *Indulge in paella in Valencia. Valencia is, after all, the birthplace of paella!

34. Visit the medieval town of Albarracin. Perched atop a hill, this town is irresistibly cute.

35. *Enjoy the chill vibes in Javea. The popular La Siesta restaurant by the sea is the epitome of chill vibes.

36. Experience the different cultures of Toledo. Toledo has got medieval monuments of Arab, Jewish, and Christian origin.

37. *Walk through the gardens of the Alcazar in Seville. This was a Game of Thrones filming location!

38. Stroll through the arches of Playa De Las Catedrals. Up north, this beach can only be accessed at low tide.

39. *Relax on the beach in Villajoyosa. This super colorful town also boasts a fantastic beach.

40. Ride the cable car up to Montserrat. And see the Stairway to Heaven monument on top of the mountain.
